Reverend Dr. Herbert W. Beard is a native of Bamberg, SC. He is the oldest son of Mary and the late George Beard. He graduated from Bamberg Ehrhardt High school and furthered his studies at Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in Sociology. After graduation, he relocated to Charleston, SC, where he was employed with the Charleston County Police Department, and later the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Rev. Beard retired in 2013 after serving 28 years. He received his Master’s degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia in May 2013 in Christian Leadership, and in May 2024, he furthered his studies and received his D.Min. in Biblical Studies from Anderson University, Anderson, SC.
Rev. Beard became the sixth Pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church, 684 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC, July 28, 2018, and currently serves as Senior Pastor. He is a teaching Pastor who is a certified instructor on the Local, State, and National levels within the National Baptist conventions USA, South Carolina and Charleston County Baptist Associations.
Rev. Beard is married to the former Allison Hill of Augusta, Georgia. Together they have four daughters, and three grandchildren. His “Affirmation of Faith” is his love for God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the precious Holy Spirit.” Philippians 4:13 “13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
